چکیده

The in vitro fate of the saturated hydrocarbon fraction (SF) of Arabian Light crude oil has been studied in PVC cores filled with a coastal marine sediment defaunated by sieving. Experiments were conducted in absence or presence of polychaetes Nereis diversicolor. The luminophore tracer technique was used to quantify the mixing of sediment by worms. Presence of crude oil reduced the building of burrows by polychaetes. This work demonstrates the ability of infaunal organisms to stimulate both downard and outward transfers of hydrocarbons from sediment reservoirs. In non-bioturbated sediment hydrocarbons were confined to the sediment surface. Introduction of polychaetes in sediment (1) induced the burying of SF in sediment (2.5 % and 13.5 % of the initial surface input after 15 and 45 days, respectively); (2) enhanced the exportation of SF in the overlying water (plus 59 % and 23.5 % compared to defaunated control sediment after 15 and 45 days, respectively). Buried hydrocarbons were submitted to biodegradation, from 2 cm to 10 cm depth in polychaete burrows, after 45 days. Bioturbation plays an important role in organic matter decomposition by increasing the water-sediment interface1 and irrigating sediment. Most burrow constructors maintain contact with the overlying water by ha l-0 07 84 34 1, v er si on 1 4 Fe b 20 13 Author manuscript, published in "Chemosphere vol. 29 (1994) pp. 1-12" DOI : 10.1016/0045-6535(94)90084-1

Influence of bioturbation by the polychaete Nereis diversicolor on the structure of bacterial communities in oil contaminated coastal sediments.

Patterns of change in the structure of bacterial communities monitored by ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA) in oil contaminated sediments inhabited or not by the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor were studied during 45 days under laboratory conditions. Results supported by principal component analysis showed a marked response of the bacterial communities to the oil contamination a...

Impact of Oil on Bacterial Community Structure in Bioturbated Sediments

Oil spills threaten coastlines where biological processes supply essential ecosystem services. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how oil influences the microbial communities in sediments that play key roles in ecosystem functioning. Ecosystems such as sediments are characterized by intensive bioturbation due to burrowing macrofauna that may modify the microbial metabolisms. It is thus esse...

The evaluation of removal efficiency of wastewater nutrition derived different densities Huso huso using polychaete worm Nereis diversicolor

Abstract This study was conducted to test the effect of bioremediation the polychaete worm Nereis diversicolor in order to removal of wastewater nutrition derived different densities Huso huso. The aim of this study was determination of different densities for creating the equivalence for rearing of N. diversicolor and H. huso rate in the integrated culture system. Three different densities of ...

Genotoxic damage in polychaetes: a study of species and cell-type sensitivities.

The marine environment is becoming increasingly contaminated by environmental pollutants with the potential to damage DNA, with marine sediments acting as a sink for many of these contaminants. Understanding genotoxic responses in sediment-dwelling marine organisms, such as polychaetes, is therefore of increasing importance. This study is an exploration of species-specific and cell-specific dif...

1-Hydroxypyrene as a biomarker of PAH exposure in the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor.

The possibility of using the pyrene metabolite 1-hydroxypyrene as a biomarker of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure was investigated by exposure of the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor to several PAHs in the laboratory. Animals were exposed to pyrene alone and to five different PAHs - phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[k]flouranthene. After five days o...
